About Us

To give you some context on the type of foods we like to eat....we will describe each others tastes (cuz that is funnier than doing it ourselves).

Food Guy (according to Food Gal)-
There are few things that Food Guy will not eat. Off the top of my head, creamy salads (i.e. potato salad and coleslaw) top the list, these are pretty much the only thing he will NOT eat. Food Guy claims, "they make me puke." I have never had the opportunity to see him eat any, so I am not sure if I believe that, but don't think I want to find out.

He was not a huge popcorn fan, but he eventually converted over to eating some with me. I like to snack on things like peanuts and almonds - something Guy is not into. He likes casseroles...he also loves Mexican food. It doesn't have to be authentic Mexican by any means, just that genre.

Food Guy does not get steak very often, so it is a treat that he really enjoys. He prefers whole milk over any other kind. Pop is one of Guy's weaknesses, which I attribute to the fact that he grew up drinking it all the time.

Food Gal (according to Food Guy)-
Food Gal is a little bit on the picky side, although she is trying to branch out. On the meat side of things, it almost has to be chicken or turkey. Breakfast meats are in the mix, but the sausage has to be in links. Red meats aren't necessarily verboten, but hamburger should be seasoned ala tacos. Cute, cuddly animals, such as veal, lamb, and puppies are definitely out.

Vegetables are where Food Gal is really making an attempt to try new things. Green beans have been added to the list, and she recently enjoyed some asparagus in a dish we made. Peas and broccoli still haven't found a place in her palate.

I think that Gal's problems with many foods are texture based and ignore the relative tastiness of a food. Beans (baked, pinto, kidney, etc.) and mashed potatos (but not baked) are generally out based on the smushiness and mushrooms find no love.

Other than these things, snacks become her downfall. Popcorn, nuts, chips, and chocolate (especially if peanut butter is involved) end up filling her up before we even get around to preparing a meal. And stay out of eyesight of a Starbucks unless you're ready to buy a Chai Tea Latte.

How we cook -
Typically Food Gal picks the menu and makes the shopping list. One or both of us shop. Food Gal is driven to get through clipped recipes and recipe books that are in the house. Somehow we accumulated a large collection of recipe books and recipes that we never used, so more than a year ago we started going through the collection. We go through and mark recipes that we are interested in. From experience we try to avoid things with an ingredient that we may only use once. We try to stay away from overly complicated recipes. Food Guy is typically the cook, while Food Gal prefers to bake...although we do switch it up.

What we usually eat -
In July of 2007 we started eating more healthfully along the lines of the Sonoma Diet (which we would both highly recommend). This means eating the proper quantity and quality of food. For the most part we now eat whole grains instead of things made with white flour. Refined sugar is also out...our sugar intake mostly comes from fruit now. Skim milk is the milk of choice. Lean meats are something we pretty much exclusively eat in the meat dept. Due to Food Gal's tastes, this limits us to mostly chicken. We do have dessert once in a while with white flour and refined sugar, since we both like sweets!
